A Week in the HomelandWell, I finally have my very own high speed, always-on Internet connection. Now I feel like a civilized human being and can keep a proper online journal. I can also now more seriously begin the job search and stay in touch with friends back home.
What does the term "back home" really mean? I find myself using it a lot to refer to America in general and New York in specific. Is this a valid characterization or a misnomer? Shouldn't "back home" refer to my apartment in Tel Aviv when I use it outside of my new place of residence?
Whatever the case may be, I'm going to try and stop using the phrase altogether because it either betrays a lingering subconscious aspiration to return to New York or an unnecessary nostalgia for things in my too-immediate past. Of course, I may just be completely insane. Which is, of course, the only logical reason - those back home claim - there is for my move.
